Williamsburg Green Subdivision is a 60ha subdivision in Kitchener consisting of low, medium and high-rise residential, mixed-used buildings, a library, parks and stormwater management facilities.
WalterFedy provided the detailed design, Contract Administration, and Project Management of the Williamsburg Green Subdivision. Phases 1 and 2 have been constructed and include 2 stormwater management facilities, a library site, 142 single detached residential lots, a medium-density residential block, parks, and a dutch roundabout. The design team consisted of WalterFedy’s civil engineering team who provided design of all the grading, servicing, roadworks, erosion and sediment control, and provided general project management and quality assurance for construction.
Unique features of the subdivision include a Dutch roundabout, a proposed painted intersection, deeps sewers, and a stormwater management (SWM) facility which provides an enhanced natural environmental benefit in addition to the stormwater management functions including water quality, quantity and temperature controls. The design of the stormwater management features on this site was intentional in complementing the environmentally sensitive features in close proximity to the site.
During construction much of the focus was around the north SWM facility where high groundwater and poor soil conditions presented challenges for the contractor which required extensive dewatering in order to facilitate earthworks and subsequent servicing.
During the construction phase of the project, extensive environmental monitoring ensured that sensitive habitat for turtles and salamanders was not affected within the headwaters of Strasburg Creek.
