WalterFedy was retained to provide Architectural and Interior Design services for the Shaganappi Pump Station. The Shaganappi Pump Station, Calgary’s largest, supplies clean drinking water to over 200,000 residents. This vital infrastructure was relocated from the northeast corner of Bowness Road NW and Shaganappi Trail NW to a new site near the “Park and Bike” lot and Montgomery View NW. The new location was chosen based on factors such as proximity to the feedermain network, available land, cost efficiency, operational needs, and ease of construction.
The design addresses the station’s prominent location near Edworthy Park, Riverside Towers, and a major intersection. A key goal was to integrate the building into the landscape, minimizing its visual impact while maintaining security and privacy. The exterior features glass canopies, metal cladding, and vertical windows that provide natural light while ensuring privacy. LED light bars along the vertical window edges create dynamic, color-changing displays, offering a public art element that enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal.
The construction includes a 4-meter-deep foundation, required to accommodate underground piping. Excavation exposed sandstone and claystone bedrock, which was leveled with concrete to provide a stable base. Temporary shoring walls ensured worker safety during the process. The new station incorporates advanced automation systems to optimize energy use, monitor flow rates, and adjust pump operations in real time. Sensors and remote monitoring enable proactive maintenance, reducing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency.
Replacing a 40-year-old station with outdated electrical equipment, this project secures reliable drinking water access for Calgarians well into the future. The design process spanned 24 months, beginning in May 2019, and the station reached substantial completion in August 2021, on schedule.
