The Joseph Brant Hospital Redevelopment project involved the construction of a seven-storey patient care tower and renovations to the existing facility, increasing the hospital’s total floor area to 780,000 SF. The expansion added 172 new beds, a new Emergency Department, nine operating rooms, and other critical healthcare services to support the growing Burlington community.

WalterFedy provided site servicing, grading, stormwater management design, inspection, contract administration, and coordination throughout construction. The site presented several challenges, including a high-water table due to its proximity to Lake Ontario and a confined footprint with adjacent buildings. Our team developed efficient subsurface infrastructure solutions to address these conditions while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

The hospital remained fully operational during construction through a phased approach that minimized disruptions to ongoing healthcare services. The redevelopment improved patient care by increasing the number of single-patient rooms to 70% of total beds, aligning with the Ministry of Health’s infection prevention and control standards. The project also included expansions to the Intensive Care Unit, diagnostic imaging, cancer clinic, ambulatory care programs, laboratory, and the Level 2B Special Care Nursery. Additional upgrades included a post-anesthetic care unit, modernized medical technology, and enhanced mechanical and electrical systems. These improvements ensure the hospital can provide high-quality care while accommodating future growth and evolving healthcare needs.
