Calgary Farmers’ Market West was conceived as more than a marketplace, it was envisioned as a vibrant community destination that celebrates local food, entrepreneurship, and social connection. Opened in August 2022, the 55,000-square-foot facility accommodates more than 70 local vendors and serves over one million visitors annually, providing a year-round gathering place where commerce, culture, and community intersect.

Inspired by the enduring character and authenticity of Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market, the design team sought to create an environment reminiscent of a repurposed old-world train station. The resulting architectural language balances industrial structure, rustic warmth, and playful moments to establish a timeless aesthetic that feels both familiar and contemporary. The space was carefully crafted to evoke the experience of an outdoor market while providing the comfort and functionality of a modern indoor venue.Shot from the centre of the market on the ground level. High glass ceilings surrounded by vendor spaces. Down the centre of the aisle there is seating.Central to the design strategy was the creation of an “outside-in” market experience. Durable steel trellises, aluminum wood-grain cladding, exposed structural elements, and expansive circulation paths establish a cohesive visual identity throughout the market. Vendor spaces were designed using a standardized yet adaptable framework, allowing each tenant to express its individual brand while maintaining overall consistency across the marketplace. This approach supports long-term operational flexibility, enabling future tenants to easily adapt spaces as needs evolve.

The market’s layout was intentionally designed to foster interaction and connectivity. Low pony walls between vendor stalls preserve clear sightlines across the marketplace, encouraging exploration and allowing visitors to engage with multiple vendors simultaneously. This openness creates a dynamic atmosphere that reinforces the communal spirit traditionally associated with outdoor public markets while maximizing visibility for local businesses.Beyond retail, Calgary Farmers’ Market West functions as a multi-purpose destination designed to support a wide range of community activities. The vibrant food hall, featuring 20 family-owned restaurants and seating for more than 300 guests, serves as the social heart of the facility. Anchored by a dramatic two-storey glass atrium and complemented by a dedicated children’s play area, the space encourages visitors to linger, gather, and connect.

A mezzanine level overlooking the market floor expands the facility’s role as a community hub. Designed to accommodate corporate events, weddings, cooking demonstrations, and educational programming, the space features a fully equipped commercial kitchen, flexible event areas, custom millwork, and integrated hospitality amenities. These complementary functions transform the market into a destination that remains active beyond traditional shopping hours and supports year-round community engagement.Specialized tenant fit-outs were completed for select vendors, incorporating integrated refrigeration, freezer systems, and customized operational requirements to support diverse food-service needs. Throughout the project, careful attention was paid to balancing functionality, aesthetics, durability, and long-term value. High-performance materials, including steel structures and wood-look aluminum products, were selected for their longevity and reduced maintenance requirements, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainable and resilient design solutions.

Accessibility was a fundamental consideration from the earliest stages of planning. The facility was designed to be fully accessible across all public areas, including both market and mezzanine levels, ensuring an inclusive experience for all visitors.

Delivered amidst significant budget pressures, supply chain disruptions, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Calgary Farmers’ Market West stands as a testament to thoughtful planning, collaboration, and design excellence. Recognized with the 2023 IDA MASI Design Award (Silver, Retail Category), the project has exceeded client expectations by creating a thriving destination that supports local commerce, strengthens community connections, and redefines the modern public market experience.
