As part of a broader plan for intensive residential development near Alexandra Park’s low-rise heritage neighborhood, the City of Waterloo expanded the park by acquiring and clearing adjacent properties along William Street. This expansion doubled the park’s size and introduced a new mid-block pedestrian connection, improving accessibility and enhancing community engagement.
WalterFedy’s Civil and Electrical Engineering teams worked alongside PLANT Architect to bring the park’s redesign to life. The revitalized space features a variety of inviting outdoor areas, including a forecourt with seating and a lounging platform along Alexandra Street, a rain garden at the William Street West entrance, and a mix of recreational spaces such as age-specific playgrounds, an adult fitness zone, picnic areas, and a flexible open space. At the heart of the park, a forested discovery path with shaded seating integrates a sculptural installation by artists Sandra Dunn and Mark Resmer, while native plantings help define the park’s edges and support local pollinators.
Our Civil Engineering team played a key role in shaping the site, providing grading, servicing design, and stormwater management solutions to ensure long-term functionality and sustainability. Additionally, the Electrical Engineering team coordinated the park’s main power connection with the local hydro provider, establishing the necessary infrastructure to support the revitalized space. The result is a well-integrated, community-focused park designed to accommodate both active and passive recreation for residents of all ages.
