WalterFedy was retained by the City of Waterloo to provide architectural design, engineering, and contract administration services for the renovation of the existing Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery located at 25 Caroline Street North in Waterloo. The Gallery was designed in 1990 by Patkau Architects (Vancouver, BC), constructed in 1993, and received the 1997 Governor General’s Awards for Architecture - Medal of Excellence.
The Gallery is a 19,851 SF one-and-one-half-storey, rectangular-shaped building. The building’s exterior windows/doors, roof, mechanical systems, and interior lighting were approaching the end of their life-cycles and were in need of replacement. Our scope of work included replacing the deteriorated windows and doors, while maintaining the architecturally significant style; replacement of the entire PVC roof; replacement of the rooftop air-conditioning units and replacing the duct furnaces with a boiler/steam humidification system; and replacing the lighting with new LED bulbs and assisting the Museum with energy rebates.

New window technology mimics the architectural style of the existing windows but provides superior protection from the outdoor environment to ensure the safety of collections and exhibitions. The energy efficient improvements to the lighting not only help the City of Waterloo realize energy/greenhouse gas emission saving goals but also incorporate new lighting into the space that is more suitable for the current usage.
