Role Overview
 

We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated business development professional to join our senior leadership team. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Business Development will lead the sales, pursuits, marketing, and communication functions of the firm with a focus on continued growth in new markets.


This is an operational leadership role that requires developing long- and short-term programs linked to the areas of focus identified above. You will create a culture of success by implementing innovative initiatives, demonstrating exceptional problem-solving skills, and using operational rigor to drive pipeline and promotional excellence. The Director will work with peers across the organization to develop actionable strategies for several brands, business units, and office locations.

What You Will Do

Business Development

  • Develop and implement a robust business development strategy to grow and diversify revenue streams and position the firm in emerging and aspirational markets
  • Build, strengthen, and maintain key relationships with external partners including community builders, prospective project partners, and clients
  • Track, report, and make recommendations on KPIs including proposal win/loss rates, sales pipeline health, and net promoter score, while overseeing quality management of our CRM system
  • Conduct market research and analyze market trends to inform strategic planning
  • Manage and mentor the sales and proposals team so they can successfully identify pursuit strategies, achieve sales targets, and nurture key relationships for future revenue opportunities

Marketing and Communications 

  • Develop a comprehensive, multi-year strategy for multiple brands including goals, key messages, target audiences, and tactics in alignment with the business development strategy
  • Support and mentor the marketing and communications team, fostering an environment of creativity, empowerment, and exploration
  • Ensure brand excellence and alignment across all digital and print mediums

Firm Leadership 

  • Provide strategic direction for environmental, social, and governance activities, including volunteerism, corporate giving, event attendance, and sponsorship
  • Inform acquisition, expansion, and succession planning strategies
  • Identify and drive process improvements across the firm that are barriers to innovation and growth
  • Actively participate in broader leadership discussions, identifying knowledge gaps, conducting goal alignment checks, and iterating on cross-organizational strategy

 

What You Bring to the Table

  • 10+ years of experience in a Business Development role selling professional services and solutions to medium and large enterprise clients
  • 5+ years of experience in a strategic leadership role overseeing and developing a business development or marketing team
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, trust-building, and persuasion skills
  • Collaborative by nature with a deep connection to our values
  • Experience with the use of CRM systems
  • Experience within the construction and/or architectural and engineering design services space is strongly preferred
  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture would be an asset, but not required

 

Working Conditions and Safety
 

Time spent in this role will be both on-site and in the office, depending on the needs of the project.  Site inspection work offsite will include field review and verifying site data, and hours will vary based on project demands.  Some overtime will be required.  In this role, you will work within the company safety policies and procedures and adhere to any applicable federal or provincial legislation.

Founded in 1951, WalterFedy is a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm based in Kitchener Ontario, with additional offices in Hamilton and Toronto. With 260 employees, we have grown rapidly through the pandemic, posting net revenue growth of 10% in 2020, 12 % in 2021 and over 25% in 2022. Earlier in 2022, we acquired Baird Sampson Neuert Architects. In the coming years, our Board of Directors has set an ambitious plan to continue to grow in new markets outside of Ontario leveraging organic and M&A growth strategies.

 

AEC, our Construction Management business, was formed in 2014 after 40 years of delivering CM services under the WalterFedy brand. AEC is a small regional construction management firm with aspirations of growth in specific market segments in the coming years.


Our Core Leadership Team, consisting of CEO, COO, Director of Finance, Controller, Director of BD, Director of HR, and Director of Innovation, are all currently WalterFedy employees but support all three businesses (WalterFedy, BSN and AEC).
